Where we work

We Combat Poaching And Manage Ecology for Wildlife Security

At Manyara Ranch, we introduced an anti-poaching unit in 2001 with a dedicated and committed team of scouts recruited from nearby communities. These scouts conduct anti-poaching patrols in and around the ranch and maintain a unit of tracker dogs to help pursue suspected poachers. Since 2015, no elephants have been poached on Manyara Ranch.

Our ecological management program focuses on three main objectives to address key threats: preventing land degradation from overgrazing, avoiding land use changes that could block key wildlife corridors, and combating poaching to ensure wildlife security. We ensure the safety of wildlife, visitors, and staff in the conservation area while maintaining property integrity.

Livestock incursions leading to overgrazing are the biggest threat to the ranch’s integrity. Researchers visiting the ranch have shown that our area, with its unusual abundance of short grasses and large plains, serves as a unique haven for giraffe breeding. We facilitate collaboration between government officials, local Maasai communities, and the African Wildlife Foundation to mitigate human-wildlife conflict and develop sustainable solutions for the future.
